In the past, this small paddock adjacent to the allotments was let to graze a pony. This arrangement came to an end in 2016, and the paddock became weed infested, and was in danger of regenerating to scrub, and was a source of much weed seeds invading the allotments.
The Allotment Society approached the Council, who owned the land, with a view to addressing the problem.
The site is now looked after jointly with the Cambridge City Council as an urban nature park, and is managed to increase the biodiversity.
In 2020, the council made a grant to make changes, including the digging of a large pond, additional hedging, fencing and other works to make the area more attractive to a range of wildlife. These works were delayed due to Covid, but the site will be fully upgraded for spring 2021.
Public have free access using the footpath at the end of Penn Close in Cherry Hinton.
